What was the worst best gift you gave or got?
The question is simple. What is the one gift that you either got or gave that was great...but later was horrible?
For me it happened today. I was going to go to my niece's 6th birthday party and I decided to get her a couple of goldfish. For $8 I got 2 goldfish, the tank and a little food.
Before the party, one of the fish died...oh well. Im giving her 1 goldfish.
The survivor did make it to the party to which my niece loved it. She couldnt stop looking at it and so did her friends. (never told her about the first fish). But 2-3 hours later when the party was over...the last goldfish....died.
How do you tell a 6 yr old that their new pet goldfish that they got that day has died?
Its hard.
I promised her that when she comes over on her birthday Ill have a new better (long living) fish which I plan on getting her a sinamese fighting fish which last for quite a while
I realize this is the etiquette section. I am going to switch gears for a second. The fish you were buying were most likely "feeder" gold fish. These fish don't live long and are not expected to. They are used to feed fish. I am not an expert on this, just a rookie that has had fish tanks most of my life. Go to the pet store and tell them what you are trying to do. Do not get the feeder gold fish. They are normally diseased, ill, etc. Get a gold fish that, though you will pay more for, is healthy and bread for longevity. It is kind of bait and switch, pardon the pun, but for a few bucks, if you are trying to replace a dead fish to stop some heartache for your little niece, go that route. I can't imagine spending more than maybe five bucks to get a healthy fish that is going to be alive, live a long time and she will not know the difference.
Feeder gold fish are the ones you win at carnivals, etc. and is what got me into fish. I won one when I was a kid. It died within a couple of days, I was heart sick. My old man bought me an aquarium with healthy fish and I was both very happy and got hooked on having an aquarium. To avoid this, just get a healthy fish. Folks at Pet Smart or pet stores that deal with aquatics and fish will be able to help you out, and it won't be expensive. Until you can figure what you choose to do, I would keep the "death" quiet. I hope you can take care of this and not have an upset niece.
PS: The worst gift I ever got was a candle.
Buying a Pet for the Holiday: A Few Tips
It’s the holiday season which means that lots of kids are going to be tugging at their parents' legs and clamoring for them to buy a dog, cat, hamster or fish for their holiday present. If you are a parent make sure you properly explain to your son or daughter how much work it will be take care of a pet and that they will have to show some responsibility if they really want it as a gift. If you are a kid remember that you are going to have to spend hours a week to take care of your new pet so if that is really what you want than make sure you are ready for that responsibility and loss of “fun time.”
Some animals are easier to take care of than others so do some research to find out the right pet you think your child would be able to properly watch. A hamster is a pretty easy pet to watch and feed but the bad thing about them is that they aren’t all that fun. They are very easy for your child to loose and they are very crafty critters who will try to escape using every nook, cranny or loose door latch possible. A loose hamster is not fun so make sure that you supervise your child when they are holding or taking it out of the cage or teach them the right way to ensure the hamster does not escape.
Fish are a great pet for all ages since they are relatively easy to maintain and they are fun to look at. The thing is that fish are more furniture sometimes than pet, and a child will quickly get bored of a pet that they can’t touch and hold. Fish tanks both large and small also require weekly water changes and cleaning so make sure you child knows that this will be a responsibility of theirs and show them the proper way to do it.
Dogs and cats are a whole different story. Remember that if you are thinking about buying a dog or cat for your child to not make the decision lightly. This is an animal life you are thinking about so only buy one if you are ready for the commitment to stay with this pet for the rest of its life. Make sure you or your family do not have any allergies either before you make this decision. All in all, do your research before buying any pet for your children and make sure you are ready for the responsibility of caring for a pet should your children delegate the duty.
