Live Rock??
Okay so I have a 210 gallon reef tank that I'm setting up.... I'm trying to figure out what kinda live rock I should use... I have a friend that has live rock with mushrooms, zoanthids, and xenia already on it because he had it in his tank for 4 years.. However I have another friend of mine told me to get uncured deep pacific show rock.. I understand your not suppose to put uncured rock into a working aquarium however I'm just now setting my tank up and looking for the best results... What I mean by best results is having the most out of the rock.... What would you get and why?
I honestly suggest getting cured rock only. With cured rock, you are placing an already mature biofilter into your tank, with only minor adjustments that need to be made at home. You may have to watch the ammonia/nitrite level for a few days, but you won't have to wait weeks to allow the level of ammonia from die-off settle down.
While cured rock is more expensive, i think it's worth it to be able to stock your tank much sooner. Cured rock will actually have more of the original life still left on it, since large curing vats at the dealer's that are 1000s of gallons will help keep ammonia levels to a minimum, and thus less casualties on your rock. In your aquarium, there is much less water, so curing your own raw rock would result in more casualties of the tiny corals and inverts.
Cured rock is also less smelly. Raw rock smells awful, and this is a good way to check at the store if the rock is cured well---it should only have a sight salty smell if it is properly cured.
You can use cured "base rock" for most of the tank's filtration to keep costs low. This is still live and useful, but doesn't have all kinds of really cool stuff on it. Then you could have a few pieces that are more expensive and interesting.

Once you have the water at the right conditions for your specific types of corals, then you can place them in the aquarium. Some of the live coral for sale in the local fish store and online will be better for a beginner's reef tank than others. Most of the preferable choices will be in the soft coral family, although there are certain hard corals such as the Montipora and Pagoda that are also good for beginners. The most well known soft corals that beginners usually start their tanks with are the Mushroom Corals, Colt Corals, Star Polyps, Zoanthid Polyps, Button Polyps and Flower Leather Corals. There are various books and guides that will help you set up your reef aquarium correctly, and there is additional information about fish like the Golden Butterfly that you will want to avoid. There are also many types of fish you can learn about that are very appropriate for cohabitating with corals.
