Backyard pond care?
ok my grandpa died and left this backyard Fish Pond. should i pull the lilli pads. i think they are killin the fish because of the lack of Oxygen.
No, leave the lilies - fish and pond plants benefit one another - the fish poop helps feed the plants, and the plants provide oxygen, shade, and places for the fish to hide from predators. What does the water look like? Is it clear or is it murky? If it is clear, then there is probably something wrong with the water quality. If there is a pond or fish store nearby, see if they can help you by analyzing the water and telling you specifically what needs to be done. If the water is murky, you should do some cleaning. There should be some sort of pump in or near the pond to filter and help oxygenate the water. Look around for electric cords and unplug them before you pull out the pumps. Open up the pump and there should be some sort of filtering material inside. Often they look like giant pot scrubbers. Rinse all the gunk off the filters with a garden hose and put them back in the pumps. If you don't find any pumps, I would highly recommend that you install one. It's practically impossible to maintain a healthy fish pond without one. If the water is really dirty looking, try draining a third or so of it (leaving plenty of water for the fish) and replacing the water with clean water. There are additives that you should put in the water if you are adding chlorinated tap water, since chlorine is harmful to fish.
Once you know how to properly manage a fish pond, it's not that hard, and there is a great deal of pleasure to it. But there's a lot to learn if you've never done it before! I highly recommend contacting a local fish or pond supply dealer. Even a pet store that sells fish may have a surprising amount of good information. Good luck!
