What size aquarium Light Bulb should I get for a 75 gal. saltwater aquarium?
My family is starting up our aquarium again. it has been years, so we are trying to learn as much as possible. In the past, we used a 40 watt bulb and the fish were fine, but the guy at the pet shop says to go bigger...the tank is 48 inches in length, 18 inches in width and 21 inches in depth in case you needed to know. Any other special advice you can give me?
Lighting has gotten much better than our first tank set up to keep coral alive in 1983. Then we built a special tank, 25 by 50 by only 13" tall and set four foot florescent tubes touching all the way across. We had been keeping saltwater then about 14 years, and finding we could not only keep coral healthy but have it grow and reproduce was an advance few then had done. The bili rubin lights used in hospitals to cure jaundice had the right wavelength spectrum for coral Zooxanthellae. Now it is by comparison to then, so much easier in large part to the improvements in lighting.
LED seems the cutting edge right now with hybrid LED/metal halide right up there. With these lights you can opt to keep corals with your fish, or watch anemones grow and divide, or just opt to keep fish that retain their colors and natural habits much better..
