Reverse osmosis, also known as hyperfiltration, is the finest filtration available today. It is the most common treatment technology used by premium bottled water companies. It is effective in eliminating or substantially reducing a very wide array of contaminants, and of all technologies used to treat drinking water in residential applications, it has the greatest range of contaminant removal. Reverse osmosis will allow the removal of particles as small as individual ions. The pores in a reverse osmosis membrane are only approximately 0.0005 micron in size (bacteria are 0.2 to 1 micron & viruses are 0.02 to 0.4 microns).
There are two types of reverse osmosis membranes commonly used in home water purification products: Thin Film Composite (TFC) and Cellulose Triacetate (CTA). TFC membranes have considerably higher rejection rates (they will filter out more contaminants) than a CTA membrane, however, they are more susceptible to degradation by chlorine. This is one of the reasons why it is important that a reverse osmosis system include quality activated carbon pre-filters.
A typical RO system is composed of an array of granular activated carbon (GAC) pre-filters, the reverse osmosis membrane, a storage tank, and a faucet to deliver the purified water to your countertop. Reverse osmosis systems vary in membrane quality, output capacity, and storage capacity.

Can you achieve health through reverse osmosis? Companies are advertising that your drinking water is making you sick and that home reverse osmosis systems can make you well again.
It is true that increasing your intake of healthy water can positively affect your health, but what comes out of home reverse osmosis systems may not be any "healthier" than your tap water.
First, you have to understand that home reverse osmosis systems de-mineralize water. Trace minerals are good for your health and make your water taste better. Even if you have a very high mineral content, a better solution is an ion exchange system to balance the mineral content, not remove all of the minerals.
If you still think that you may be able to achieve better health through reverse osmosis, consider this. Home reverse osmosis systems do not block chlorine and other chemical contaminants.
Chlorine, drugs, hormones, pesticides, herbicides and a thousand other chemicals are present in ground water and tap water. It is chemicals, more than anything else, that threaten our health, today.
The idea that you that there are benefits to your health through reverse osmosis treatment may stem from the fact that it can remove "particulates". Particulates are basically dirt. Dirt is not present in tap water. Modern well water is not contaminated with dirt.
So, unless your only source of drinking water is a river, stream or mountain lake, you do not need home reverse osmosis systems. And, even if that is where your water comes from, safe water and better health through reverse osmosis alone is simply not possible.
In water sources that have not been disinfected, either with chemicals or UV treatment, there are bacteria, of all kinds. Waterborne diseases like cholera and typhoid are caused by bacteria. Home reverse osmosis systems do not kill bacteria. They cannot disinfect the water.
So, there is no better health through reverse osmosis, alone. No matter where you live or what your water source, home reverse osmosis systems cannot make it safe to drink.
The only real benefit to your health through reverse osmosis would be if you needed kidney dialysis. Kidney dialysis is a type of reverse osmosis filter.
There are many disadvantages to home reverse osmosis systems. They waste a lot of water. They require electricity. They are extremely expensive. They cannot be installed without the assistance of an electrician and a plumber.
Nearly everyone today needs good quality drinking water filters. Increasing your intake of healthy water will improve the function of your immune system. You will have less headaches, back and joint pain. If you suffer from arthritis, asthma or morning sickness, increasing your fluid intake will help.
It’s just that home reverse osmosis systems do not create healthy drinking water. You would still need disinfection, carbon filtration and micron filtration.
Even with all of those extra steps, you would still have de-mineralized water. Research has shown that drinking de-mineralized water on a regular basis causes stomach problems, digestive disorders and mineral deficiencies.
Hopefully, you see that there are no benefits to your health through reverse osmosis, but there are great systems on the market that cost less and can help you improve and protect your health. It’s worth the effort to look for one.
