Penguin 170 filter on 55 gallon?
I recieved a marineland penguin 170 filter from my cousin. My tank is a 55 gallon and has 4 tiny cichilds in there. Is this filter sufficient or should I upgrade to the 350 or a higher capacity filter? Fish are small now but will grow to over 6 inches.
Couldn't find any info on the 170 since it's an older model.
Definitely beef up your filtration. I highly recommend a canister, or short of that, an Aquaclear 110 would be great. If you're loyal to Marineland, try for a Marineland HOT Pro System Magnum (the one with the bio-wheel), or if you really want a classic filter, then go for something like the Emperor 400.
With the Aquaclears, you only have to ever change the bag of carbon. Changing anything else is a waste. Rinse the sponge, and you don't change the white bio-media. Flow is not impeded by media. I use these filters exclusively, and the sponge on the bottom is always evenly dirty...not concentrated in one region.
If you get the Emperor 400, don't bother with ammo chips. That's what the bio-wheels are for.
