Is it possible in a planted aquarium for your bio-filter to die?
Was thinking today while I was staring into my tetra tank, that if I had enough plants in there, could they starve the bio-filter?
My tetra tank is very heavily planted. It has a good stock of fish, yet the ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates always test 0 since I replaced the bulbs in my light with 6700k.
I know plants absorb pretty much anything nitrogen, and my plants pearl a lot so they're getting good levels of everything.. What do you think? If I were to remove all my plants, would I see an ammonia or nitrite spike? Could the plants be devouring the ammonia and robbing the beneficial bacteria of it's food and causing it to die?
I run an air pump with bubble stones at night to keep CO2 levels in check when the lights are out ![]()
No way I'm going to add ammonia to an aquarium with fish in it! Way too risky
To a certain extent yes.
It's unlikely that you will ever kill of ALL the cycle bacteria, and things will find their own balance with the bacteria and plants each absorbing some of the ammonia.
If you make any sudden changes to the setup and stocking of your tank you can of course upset the nitrogen cycle, but as long as changes aren't big or sudden the tank will quickly re-adjust itself.
