What types of Filter Media would most encourage bacteria growth in the water to speed up the cycling period?
I have a 29gal tall saltwater Reef Aquarium, its been going for a little over a year. Two weeks ago i purchased a 75gal and want to transfer my inhabitants. I know not to rush things, but anything to acquire the correct water parameters and encourage the growth of beneficial microorganisms to cycle my tank. I have a JEBO 838 Canister Filter which has 4 stage filtration. Currently the filter media i am using is ( in order from top media basket to bottom media basket) 1. White foam, blue sponge 2. large ceramic rings 3. Small ceramic rings 4. Activated carbon. What types of filter media would most encourage bacteria growth in the water to speed up the cycling period? Thanks!!
The bacteria will stick to almost anything - that is, all filter media and aquarium ornaments.
What you can do, is add actual bacteria to your water to speed up the cycling process. It's not a nasty chemical, just real life bacteria.
Everything you have explained in your filter are good at holding bacteria - especially the ceramic rings. I have something similar to ceramic rings called BIOMAX - allows a site for many bacteria to develop.
So all you have to do is transfer some tank water from your current tank to the new tank (like your doing a water change). And then top up the new tank with normal water and add some live bacteria.
During the cycling period, do not add any chemicals - it will just make it worse.
Best of luck,
