Do I need to run my aquarium pumps around the clock?
I am in the processes of setting up a 47 inch x 15 inch x 15 inch aquarium. I plan to have live plants and angle fish. I have an air pump with 4 small air stones and a water pump to drive a bacteriological filter on the side of the aquarium, Do I necessarily need to run both pumps 24x7 or can I set one of them on the same timer as the lights i.e. 12 hours a day?
you definitely need to run the hanging bacteriological filter 24/7, for two reasons: 1) this is the source of filtration to keep the water clean, and 2) the bacteria living in the filter need to have a constant water source (bringing them the fish waste, which they eat up and convert into less-harmful substances) to stay alive. if you turned off the filter, the water would become fouled and also the bacteria would die.
i agree that the air pump is optional and could be turned off at night, provided that you do not overstock your tank - i.e. don't try to stick too many fish for the size. the running of the filter, plus normal gas exchange at the surface of the tank, should provide enough oxygenation of the water to allow the fish to breathe. air pumps do provide additional aeration, but if you stock lightly this should not be necessary.
make sure you have read up on the nitrogen cycle and the process of cycling a fish tank, before you go out and buy your fish!!! (google them if you're not sure.) this is critical to the success of your new tank. make sure you have test kits to check the levels of ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates so you can monitor the cycling process. (it's good to have a pH test kit as well.)
