What's the best way to get cheap aquarium plants?
I want to plant my aquarium really badly, but I have fish that will probably tear up/eat plants. I don't mind fixing their mess, but plants at my LFS are $10 and up. It could get very expensive. I tried finding a forum local to my area so maybe I could trade other fish-keepers, but no luck, only found saltwater forums.
Are there any alternatives that might help me out?
Buy a couple of plants that grow prolifically, like:
banana lilies - they grow a long stem to the top of the tank and form a lily type leaf that will sprout its own roots once they are a good size and you nip the stem
cabomba - densely growing plant that can be propogated to grow more plants
java moss - grows on anything, rocks, driftwood, other plants
Water Sprite AKA Indian Fern - you can plant this or leave it to float, I have this and it makes a great coverage for smaller fish and I keep having to remove it from my tank when it is too prolific
Also, I attached a plastic low bushy plant to the glass support in the middle of my aquarium and other plants attach and grow onto it, you can remove it when you are happy with your floating aquascape
